As I was originally a graphics guy myself, George’s work gives me an inordinate amount of pleasure. More than anyone else, he makes me look more talented than I am, for which I am usually privately grateful. 20 years ago, Mike Seeley joined me as office manager, and he has been keeping chaos at bay ever since. Like everyone else, Mike works with me part-time, but you’d never know it to see my studio. As anyone who’s ever dealt with him is aware, Mike’s the nicest guy on the team, although as the newbie, he has to be.

In the early hours of January 29, 1985, I was standing in the back of a room at A&M Studios in Hollywood, watching forty-five of the most famous recording artists in the world mingle during a break. They were recording what would become the massively successful anthem “We Are the World,” and a photographer from Life and I were the only outsiders present. With no entourages permitted, the musicians were on their own, and they proved surprisingly shy. Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen circled each other nervously.

That Jimmy’s output was strictly novelty music didn’t seem to dim his prospects. Power pop took care of that. The era of the sensitive singer/songwriter over, Jimmy’s career went into a controlled dive. Over the years, he’s tried everything to pull out of it, from standards to soft rock covers to downloads to ringtones, but nothing has quite seemed to work. Even as a legacy act, Jimmy’s pretty much over. Not that he’s noticed. Jimmy moves ahead doggedly, and to his credit, he’s never once recalled that night at A&M studios as the high-water mark it so clearly was.
